As per previous discussion, it was decided that the Stream classes
should be constructed on the heap.
While I don't personally agree with this change, it does have the
benefit of avoiding Function object reconstructions due to the lambda
passed to Notifier pointing to a stale object reference. This also has
the benefit of not having to "box" objects for virtual usage, as the
objects come pre-boxed.
However, it means that we now hit the heap everytime we construct a
TCPSocket for instance, which might not be desirable.
Add them in `<Kernel/API/Device.h>` and use these to provides
`{makedev,major,minor}` in `<sys/sysmacros.h>`. It aims to be more in
line with other Unix implementations and avoid code duplication in user
land.
Briefly flash the menubar menu containing the keyboard shortcut action
to give the user immediate visual feedback on their interaction with the
system.
`length` was inheriting `size_t` type of the `String::length()`, while
everywhere else in the Inspector we expect fixed 32-bit field. On the
architectures where `sizeof(size_t) != sizeof(u32)` this broke the
Inspector communication completely.
Instead of making it a void function, checking for an exception, and
then receiving the relevant result via VM::last_value(), we can
consolidate all of this by using completions.
This allows us to remove more uses of VM::exception(), and all uses of
VM::last_value().
This is partially a revert of commits:

Rather than adding the prot_exec pledge requried to use dlopen(), we can
link directly against LibUnicodeData in applications that we know need
that library.
This might make the dlopen() dance a bit unnecessary. The same purpose
might now be fulfilled with weak symbols. That can be revisted next, but
for now, this at least removes the potential security risk of apps like
the Browser having prot_exec privileges.
This implements:
- console.group()
- console.groupCollapsed()
- console.groupEnd()
In the Browser, we use `<details>` for the groups, which is not actually
implemented yet, so groups are always open.
In the REPL, groups are non-interactive, but still indent any output.
This looks weird since the console prompt and return values remain on
the far left, but this matches what Node does so it's probably fine. :^)
I expect `console.group()` is not used much outside of browsers.
The spec very kindly defines `Printer` as accepting
"Implementation-specific representations of printable things such as a
stack trace or group." for the `args`. We make use of that here by
passing the `Trace` itself to `Printer`, instead of having to produce a
representation of the stack trace in advance and then pass that to
`Printer`. That both avoids the hassle of tracking whether the data has
been html-encoded or not, and means clients don't have to implement the
whole `trace()` algorithm, but only the code needed to output the trace.
The `CountReset` log level is displayed as a warning, since the message
is always to warn that the counter doesn't exist. This is also in line
with the table at https://console.spec.whatwg.org/#loglevel-severity
This implements the Logger and Printer abstract operations defined in
the console spec, and stubs out the Formatter AO. These are then used
for the "output a categorized log message" functions.
I encountered a WindowServer crash due to null-pointer dereference in
this function, so let's protect against it by simply skipping over
nulled-out WeakPtrs.
I added a FIXME about how we ideally wouldn't be in this situation in
the first place, but that will require some more investigation.
When computing the 'output mix', the Mixer iterates over all client
audio streams and computes a 'mixed sample' taking into account mainly
the client's volume.
This new member and methods will allow us to ignore a muted client
when computing that mix.
The 'muted' methods referred to the 'main mix muted' but it wasn't
really clear from the name. This change will be useful because in the
next commit, a 'self muted' state will be added to each audio client
connection.
The `m_remaining_samples` attribute was underflowing at the end of an
audio stream. This fix guards against the underflow by only decrementing
the attribute when it is greater than zero.
I found this bug because the SoundPlayer userland application was not
correctly detecting when an audio stream was completed. This was
happening because the remaining samples being returned from the client
audio connection was an underflowed 16 bit integer instead of zero.
Loading libunicodedata.so will require dlopen(), which in turn requires
mmap(). The 'prot_exec' pledge is needed for this.
Further, the .so itself must be unveiled for reading. The "real" path is
unveiled (libunicodedata.so.serenity) as the symlink (libunicodedata.so)
itself cannot be unveiled.
This file refers to the controlling terminal associated with the current
process. It's specified by POSIX, and is used by ports like openssh to
interface with the terminal even if the standard input/output is
redirected to somewhere else.
Our implementation leverages ProcFS's existing facilities to create
process-specific symbolic links. In our setup, `/dev/tty` is a symbolic
link to `/proc/self/tty`, which itself is a symlink to the appropriate
`/dev/pts` entry. If no TTY is attached, `/dev/tty` is left dangling.
This is an encapsulation of the common work done by all of our
single-client IPC servers on startup:
1. Create a Core::LocalSocket, taking over an accepted fd.
2. Create an application-specific ClientConnection object,
wrapping the socket.
It's not a huge change in terms of lines saved, but I do feel that it
improves expressiveness. :^)
This encapsulates what our multi-client IPC servers typically do on
startup:
1. Create a Core::LocalServer
2. Take over a listening socket file descriptor from SystemServer
3. Set up an accept handler for incoming connections
IPC::MultiServer does all this for you! All you have to do is provide
the relevant client connection type as a template argument.
These ones all manage their storage internally, whereas the WebContent
and ImageDecoder ones require the caller to manage their lifetime. This
distinction is not obvious to the user without looking through the code,
so an API that makes this clearer would be nice.
The handling of filesystem level errors was basically non-existing or
consisting of `VERIFY_NOT_REACHED` assertions. Addressed this by
* Adding `open` methods to `Heap` and `Database` which return errors.
* Changing the interface of methods of these classes and clients
downstream to propagate these errors.
The constructors of `Heap` and `Database` don't open the underlying
filesystem file anymore.
The SQL statement handlers return an `SQLErrorCode::InternalError`
error code if an error comes back from the lower levels. Note that some
of these errors are things like duplicate index entry errors that should
be caught before the SQL layer attempts to actually update the database.
Added tests to catch attempts to open weird or non-existent files as
databases.
Finally, in between me writing this patch and submitting the PR the
AK::Result<Foo, Bar> template got deprecated in favour of ErrorOr<Foo>.
This resulted in more busywork.
Everyone used this hook in the same way: immediately accept() on the
socket and then do something with the newly accepted fd.
This patch simplifies the hook by having LocalServer do the accepting
automatically.
Previously, Virtio console ports would not show up in `/sys/dev/char/`.
Also adds support to `SystemServer` to create more than one console
port device in `/dev/` in the multiport case.
We were calling value() on an ErrorOr containing an error when trying
to extract the frame duration after a failed decode.
This fixes ImageDecoder crashing on various websites.
Previously, a libc-like out-of-line error information was used in the
loader and its plugins. Now, all functions that may fail to do their job
return some sort of Result. The universally-used error type ist the new
LoaderError, which can contain information about the general error
category (such as file format, I/O, unimplemented features), an error
description, and location information, such as file index or sample
index.
Additionally, the loader plugins try to do as little work as possible in
their constructors. Right after being constructed, a user should call
initialize() and check the errors returned from there. (This is done
transparently by Loader itself.) If a constructor caused an error, the
call to initialize should check and return it immediately.
This opportunity was used to rework a lot of the internal error
propagation in both loader classes, especially FlacLoader. Therefore, a
couple of other refactorings may have sneaked in as well.
The adoption of LibAudio users is minimal. Piano's adoption is not
important, as the code will receive major refactoring in the near future
anyways. SoundPlayer's adoption is also less important, as changes to
refactor it are in the works as well. aplay's adoption is the best and
may serve as an example for other users. It also includes new buffering
behavior.
Buffer also gets some attention, making it OOM-safe and thereby also
propagating its errors to the user.
235f39e449 secretly added an if check that ignores all the files that
couldn't be loaded into bitmaps. Unfortunately, we send an empty path
as a way to unset the wallpaper, which meant that we couldn't go back
to the default background color anymore.
Executing `asctl set r 96000` no longer results in weird sample rates
being set on the audio devices. SB16 checks for a sample rate between 1
and 44100 Hz, while AC97 implements double-rate support which allows
sample rates between 8kHz and 96kHZ.
With this change, System::foo() becomes Core::System::foo().
Since LibCore builds on other systems than SerenityOS, we now have to
make sure that wrappers work with just a standard C library underneath.
Previously, when the --unlink flag was passed to CrashReporter, it
unlinked the coredump file immediately after reading it.
This change makes it so the coredump file is deleted when CrashReporter
exits.
This isn't a complete conversion to ErrorOr<void>, but a good chunk.
The end goal here is to propagate buffer allocation failures to the
caller, and allow the use of TRY() with formatting functions.
Also add slightly richer parse errors now that we can include a string
literal with returned errors.
This will allow us to use TRY() when working with JSON data.
This fixes all current code smells, bugs and issues reported by
SonarCloud static analysis. Other issues are almost exclusively false
positives. This makes much code clearer, and some minor benefits in
performance or bug evasion may be gained.
Render the window switcher with the same background and shadow as other
WindowServer overlays.
Note that we don't actually render it as a WindowServer::Overlay, as the
window switcher uses mouse and keyboard events, and there's currently
no way for an overlay to receive events.
This fixes an issue with menus not being immediately "usable" with the
the right mouse button after opening a context menu.
The bug was that we were clearing a local pointer to the active input
tracking window instead of the pointer in WindowStack.
We need to make sure the menu was pushed to the open menu stack before
calling set_visible, as this may trigger cursor re-evaluation, which
in turn expects the menu to be considered open.

Same as Vector, ByteBuffer now also signals allocation failure by
returning an ENOMEM Error instead of a bool, allowing us to use the
TRY() and MUST() patterns.
Because SQL is the craptastic language that it is, sometimes expressions
need to know details about the calling statement. For example the tables
in the 'FROM' clause may be needed to determine which columns are
referenced in 'WHERE' expressions. So the current statement is added
to the ExecutionContext and a new 'execute' overload on Statement is
created which takes the Database and the Statement and builds an
ExecutionContaxt from those.
"Frame" is an MPEG term, which is not only unintuitive but also
overloaded with different meaning by other codecs (e.g. FLAC).
Therefore, use the standard term Sample for the central audio structure.
The class is also extracted to its own file, because it's becoming quite
large. Bundling these two changes means not distributing similar
modifications (changing names and paths) across commits.

The call to set_visible() is not redundant. Removing the call leads
to the "start" button in the taskbar not being painted as "pressed" even
when it is.
We've already returned early if the menu is open, so there's no need to
verify that it isn't present in the stack of open menus before pushing
it onto said stack.
WindowServer returns {} on non-existing screen index,
however shot program hangs instead of retriving an empty
ShareableBitmap. With this change, the function returns an empty
ShareableBitmap and shot exits gracefully.
This makes the cursor update properly if it was above the window
switcher while it was visible, and something underneath it wants to use
something other than the default arrow cursor.
...to reevaluate_hover_state_for_window(). This name is not super great
either, but at least it doesn't sound like the window is necessarily
currently being hovered.
In 2e6bb987a3 the "did_construct" API in
Core::Object was removed, since it had only one user. For a replacement,
the Window would manually call the frame's "frame_was_constructed"
method. However, WindowServer::Window has two constructors, and only one
of them called this method. This caused windows to spawn without
buttons and various other breakage that spawned from this.
Derivatives of Core::Object should be constructed through
ClassName::construct(), to avoid handling ref-counted objects with
refcount zero. Fixing the visibility means that misuses like this are
more difficult.
This commit is separate from the other Servives changes because it
required additional adaption of the code. Note that the old code did
precisely what these changes try to prevent: Create and handle a
ref-counted object with a refcount of zero.

There is also make_ref_counted(), which does not call did_construct(),
so the method was not guaranteed to be run. Since there is only a single
user, and `WindowServer::Window` is a final class anyway (so there is no
need to separate the constructor and post-constructor phases), let's get
rid of this concept.
(The following commits reduce the opportunities to call
make_ref_counted, but still.)
For file copying, when there is a file with the same name in the
destination directory, the file will be automatically renamed to
"file-2.txt", for example. This change expands that special-case
handling to file moving.
We create a base class called GenericFramebufferDevice, which defines
all the virtual functions that must be implemented by a
FramebufferDevice. Then, we make the VirtIO FramebufferDevice and other
FramebufferDevice implementations inherit from it.
The most important consequence of rearranging the classes is that we now
have one IOCTL method, so all drivers should be committed to not
override the IOCTL method or make their own IOCTLs of FramebufferDevice.
All graphical IOCTLs are known to all FramebufferDevices, and it's up to
the specific implementation whether to support them or discard them (so
we require extensive usage of KResult and KResultOr, together with
virtual characteristic functions).
As a result, the interface is much cleaner and understandable to read.
The Screen constructor already calls open_device(), so there's no need
to call it again right after creating a new Screen in apply_layout().
This makes the first screen compose happen ~50ms earlier on my machine.
This function only did one thing: call Screen::set_resolution().
We always call that function when opening the underlying device anyway,
so this was completely redundant.

'bootmode' now only controls which set of services are started by
SystemServer, so it is more appropriate to rename it to system_mode, and
no longer validate it in the Kernel.
Add option to reverse primary and secondary buttons in Mouse Settings.
- WindowServer.ini: add default entry
- switch-mouse-buttons.png: new icon for settings entry
- Mouse.gml/MouseWidget.*: new settings dialog
- ClientConnection/WindowManager/Server: window message for settings
- EventLoop.cpp: swap buttons 1 and 2 if settings are on
If a mouse button was clicked, `EventLoop::drain_mouse()` would always
send the last MousePacket state to the screen input - even if that
state is equivalent to the last state sent as part of the button logic.
By remembering if the state was already sent, we prevent sending that
state a second time saving some resources in the process.
Currently, if there are not titlebar buttons, we fail to paint the title
because we treat the leftmost titlebar button as the empty rect. We will
now use the rightmost edge of the titlebar when there are no buttons.
This effectively makes us send a "mouse move" event to windows when they
become active, even if the mouse didn't actually move. By doing this, we
trigger hover/tooltip/etc logic immediately, instead of doing it on the
next 1px mouse movement.
It's a small detail but my goodness does it feel better this way. :^)
Prior to this change, there was no requirement to build this server.
If you build serenity without -DBUILD_EVERYTHING flag, or just play
around with your build configuration[1], it left you with a blank
screen and this debug line:
SystemServer(6:6): LoginServer: binary "/bin/LoginServer" does not
exist, skipping service.

The old versions were renamed to JS_DECLARE_OLD_NATIVE_FUNCTION and
JS_DEFINE_OLD_NATIVE_FUNCTION, and will be eventually removed once all
native functions were converted to the new format.
Per spec, the initial containing block (ICB) should have the size of the
viewport. We have only done this for the width until now, since we had
no way to express scrollable overflow.
This patch adds Layout::Box::m_overflow_data, an optional struct that
can hold on to information about a box's overflow. Then we have BFC
set the ICB up with some scrollable overflow instead of sizing it to fit
its content vertically.
This fixes a number of broken layouts where correctness depends on
having the appropriate ICB height.
At the risk of introducing premature optimization, it only syncs to disk
5 seconds after the latest valid configuration update, to handle cases
where programs might send frequent updates that would go to disk every
time otherwise.
Also syncs to disk when the client connection closes.

I personally find it very distracting when the clock continuously
shifts around as seconds tick. Because we're not using a monospace
font for the clock, this is to be expected since each number has a
different typographic width.
However, a tradeoff can be made to make this slightly less distracting.
Instead of _perfectly_ centering the time string for every given
possible time, we can center it once based on a constant measurement
and render the rest of the string as left-aligned.
The advantage is that the clock no longer shifts around anymore while
seconds tick. The disadvantage is that the time may sometimes be not
perfectly centered by a pixel or two for certain numbers. Personally,
I find the tradeoff well worth it, and I don't think I would even
notice the imperfect centering unless I was specifically looking for
it and watching it for a long time.
