- separate exported function from implementation, to allow for GoDoc to be maintained in a single location. - don't use named return variables (no "bare" return, and potentially shadowing variables) - reverse the `os.IsNotExist(err) && d != dir` condition, putting the "lighter" `d != dir` first.
