  3. * The "Long Time Coming" Release *
  4. * 3 April 2003 *
  5. *****************************************************************/
  6. In this edition of SquirrelMail Release Notes:
  7. * All about this Release!
  8. * A note on PHP 4.3.x
  9. * Major updates
  10. * A note on plugins
  11. * Reporting my favorite SquirrelMail 1.4 bug
  12. All about this Release!
  13. =======================
  14. This is the first release of our new 1.4.x-series which is officially
  15. labeled STABLE! We've been through a long development trajectory
  16. which has resulted in this version. The big plusses of 1.4 over the
  17. previous 1.2.x series are enhanced stability, better compatibility
  18. with a wide range of mail/websystems, more features and less bugs.
  19. See the Major Updates section of this file for more.
  20. A note on PHP 4.3.x
  21. ===================
  22. While the developers realize that PHP 4.3.x is the "latest and greatest"
  23. version of PHP to be available, SquirrelMail has not been extensively
  24. tested with it. We currently believe that SquirrelMail should work on
  25. PHP 4.3.x but we lack the experience with this new version to be
  26. absolutely sure. If you want to be safe, or experience problems, you may
  27. want to downgrade to PHP 4.2.x.
  28. Major updates
  29. ==============
  30. The 1.4.0 series (as a result of 1.3 developent series) brings:
  31. * A complete rewrite of the way we send mail (Deliver-class),
  32. and of the way we parse mail (MIME-bodystructure parsing).
  33. This makes SquirrelMail more reliable and more efficient
  34. at the same time!
  35. * Support for IMAP UID which makes SquirrelMail more reliable.
  36. * Optimizations to code and the number of IMAP calls; SquirrelMail
  37. is now a very scalable webmail solution.
  38. * Support for a wider range of authentication mechanisms.
  39. * Lots of bugfixes, some new features and a couple of UI-tweaks.
  40. A note on plugins
  41. =================
  42. There have been major plugin architecture improvements. Lots of plugins
  43. have not yet been adapted to this. Plugins which are distributed with
  44. this release (eg. in the same .tar.gz file) should work. Plugin authors
  45. will need some time to adapt their plugins, so quite some plugins
  46. might not work.
  47. So if you have ANY problem at all, first try turning off all plugins.
  48. If one plugin seems to be the culprit, contact the author to see if
  49. a 1.4.x version is underway.
  50. Reporting my favorite SquirrelMail 1.4 bug
  51. ==========================================
  52. We constantly aim to make SquirrelMail even better. So we need you to
  53. submit any bug you come across! Also, please mention that the bug is
  54. in this 1.4.0 release, and list your IMAP server and webserver details.
  55. http://www.squirrelmail.org/bugs
  56. Thanks for your cooperation with this. That helps us to make
  57. sure nothing slips through the cracks. Also, it would help if
  58. people would check existing tracker items for a bug before reporting
  59. it again. This would help to eliminate duplicate reports, and
  60. increase the time we can spend CODING by DECREASING the time we
  61. spend sorting through bug reports. And remember, check not only OPEN
  62. bug reports, but also closed ones as a bug that you report MAY have
  63. been fixed in CVS already.
  64. If you want to join us in coding SquirrelMail, or have other
  65. things to share with the developers, join the development mailinglist:
