  1. :title: Remote API
  2. :description: API Documentation for Docker
  3. :keywords: API, Docker, rcli, REST, documentation
  4. .. COMMENT use http://pythonhosted.org/sphinxcontrib-httpdomain/ to
  5. .. document the REST API.
  6. =================
  7. Docker Remote API
  8. =================
  9. .. contents:: Table of Contents
  10. 1. Brief introduction
  11. =====================
  12. - The Remote API is replacing rcli
  13. - By default the Docker daemon listens on unix:///var/run/docker.sock and the client must have root access to interact with the daemon
  14. - If a group named *docker* exists on your system, docker will apply ownership of the socket to the group
  15. - The API tends to be REST, but for some complex commands, like attach
  16. or pull, the HTTP connection is hijacked to transport stdout stdin
  17. and stderr
  18. - Since API version 1.2, the auth configuration is now handled client
  19. side, so the client has to send the authConfig as POST in
  20. /images/(name)/push
  21. 2. Versions
  22. ===========
  23. The current version of the API is 1.5
  24. Calling /images/<name>/insert is the same as calling
  25. /v1.5/images/<name>/insert
  26. You can still call an old version of the api using
  27. /v1.0/images/<name>/insert
  28. :doc:`docker_remote_api_v1.5`
  29. *****************************
  30. What's new
  31. ----------
  32. .. http:post:: /images/create
  33. **New!** You can now pass registry credentials (via an AuthConfig object)
  34. through the `X-Registry-Auth` header
  35. .. http:post:: /images/(name)/push
  36. **New!** The AuthConfig object now needs to be passed through
  37. the `X-Registry-Auth` header
  38. .. http:get:: /containers/json
  39. **New!** The format of the `Ports` entry has been changed to a list of
  40. dicts each containing `PublicPort`, `PrivatePort` and `Type` describing a
  41. port mapping.
  42. :doc:`docker_remote_api_v1.4`
  43. *****************************
  44. What's new
  45. ----------
  46. .. http:post:: /images/create
  47. **New!** When pull a repo, all images are now downloaded in parallel.
  48. .. http:get:: /containers/(id)/top
  49. **New!** You can now use ps args with docker top, like `docker top <container_id> aux`
  50. .. http:get:: /events:
  51. **New!** Image's name added in the events
  52. :doc:`docker_remote_api_v1.3`
  53. *****************************
  54. docker v0.5.0 51f6c4a_
  55. What's new
  56. ----------
  57. .. http:get:: /containers/(id)/top
  58. List the processes running inside a container.
  59. .. http:get:: /events:
  60. **New!** Monitor docker's events via streaming or via polling
  61. Builder (/build):
  62. - Simplify the upload of the build context
  63. - Simply stream a tarball instead of multipart upload with 4
  64. intermediary buffers
  65. - Simpler, less memory usage, less disk usage and faster
  66. .. Warning::
  67. The /build improvements are not reverse-compatible. Pre 1.3 clients
  68. will break on /build.
  69. List containers (/containers/json):
  70. - You can use size=1 to get the size of the containers
  71. Start containers (/containers/<id>/start):
  72. - You can now pass host-specific configuration (e.g. bind mounts) in
  73. the POST body for start calls
  74. :doc:`docker_remote_api_v1.2`
  75. *****************************
  76. docker v0.4.2 2e7649b_
  77. What's new
  78. ----------
  79. The auth configuration is now handled by the client.
  80. The client should send it's authConfig as POST on each call of
  81. /images/(name)/push
  82. .. http:get:: /auth
  83. **Deprecated.**
  84. .. http:post:: /auth
  85. Only checks the configuration but doesn't store it on the server
  86. Deleting an image is now improved, will only untag the image if it
  87. has children and remove all the untagged parents if has any.
  88. .. http:post:: /images/<name>/delete
  89. Now returns a JSON structure with the list of images
  90. deleted/untagged.
  91. :doc:`docker_remote_api_v1.1`
  92. *****************************
  93. docker v0.4.0 a8ae398_
  94. What's new
  95. ----------
  96. .. http:post:: /images/create
  97. .. http:post:: /images/(name)/insert
  98. .. http:post:: /images/(name)/push
  99. Uses json stream instead of HTML hijack, it looks like this:
  100. .. sourcecode:: http
  101. HTTP/1.1 200 OK
  102. Content-Type: application/json
  103. {"status":"Pushing..."}
  104. {"status":"Pushing", "progress":"1/? (n/a)"}
  105. {"error":"Invalid..."}
  106. ...

  118. Docker Remote API Client Libraries
  119. ==================================
  120. These libraries have not been tested by the Docker Maintainers for
  121. compatibility. Please file issues with the library owners. If you
  122. find more library implementations, please list them in Docker doc bugs
  123. and we will add the libraries here.
