  2. :description: API Documentation for Docker

  4. .. COMMENT use https://pythonhosted.org/sphinxcontrib-httpdomain/ to
  5. .. document the REST API.
  6. =================
  7. Docker Remote API
  8. =================
  9. 1. Brief introduction
  10. =====================
  11. - The Remote API is replacing rcli
  12. - By default the Docker daemon listens on unix:///var/run/docker.sock and the client must have root access to interact with the daemon
  13. - If a group named *docker* exists on your system, docker will apply ownership of the socket to the group
  14. - The API tends to be REST, but for some complex commands, like attach
  15. or pull, the HTTP connection is hijacked to transport stdout stdin
  16. and stderr
  17. - Since API version 1.2, the auth configuration is now handled client
  18. side, so the client has to send the authConfig as POST in
  19. /images/(name)/push
  20. 2. Versions
  21. ===========
  22. The current version of the API is 1.10
  23. Calling /images/<name>/insert is the same as calling
  24. /v1.10/images/<name>/insert
  25. You can still call an old version of the api using
  26. /v1.0/images/<name>/insert
  27. v1.10
  28. *****
  29. Full Documentation
  30. ------------------
  31. :doc:`docker_remote_api_v1.10`
  32. What's new
  33. ----------
  34. .. http:delete:: /images/(name)
  35. **New!** You can now use the force parameter to force delete of an image, even if it's
  36. tagged in multiple repositories.
  37. **New!** You can now use the noprune parameter to prevent the deletion of parent images
  38. .. http:delete:: /containers/(id)
  39. **New!** You can now use the force paramter to force delete a container, even if
  40. it is currently running
  41. v1.9
  42. ****
  43. Full Documentation
  44. ------------------
  45. :doc:`docker_remote_api_v1.9`
  46. What's new
  47. ----------
  48. .. http:post:: /build
  49. **New!** This endpoint now takes a serialized ConfigFile which it uses to
  50. resolve the proper registry auth credentials for pulling the base image.
  51. Clients which previously implemented the version accepting an AuthConfig
  52. object must be updated.
  53. v1.8
  54. ****
  55. Full Documentation
  56. ------------------
  57. :doc:`docker_remote_api_v1.8`
  58. What's new
  59. ----------
  60. .. http:post:: /build
  61. **New!** This endpoint now returns build status as json stream. In case
  62. of a build error, it returns the exit status of the failed command.
  63. .. http:get:: /containers/(id)/json
  64. **New!** This endpoint now returns the host config for the container.
  65. .. http:post:: /images/create
  66. .. http:post:: /images/(name)/insert
  67. .. http:post:: /images/(name)/push
  68. **New!** progressDetail object was added in the JSON. It's now possible
  69. to get the current value and the total of the progress without having to
  70. parse the string.
  71. v1.7
  72. ****
  73. Full Documentation
  74. ------------------
  75. :doc:`docker_remote_api_v1.7`
  76. What's new
  77. ----------
  78. .. http:get:: /images/json
  79. The format of the json returned from this uri changed. Instead of an entry
  80. for each repo/tag on an image, each image is only represented once, with a
  81. nested attribute indicating the repo/tags that apply to that image.
  82. Instead of:
  83. .. sourcecode:: http
  84. HTTP/1.1 200 OK
  85. Content-Type: application/json

  156. .. http:get:: /images/viz
  157. This URI no longer exists. The ``images --viz`` output is now generated in
  158. the client, using the ``/images/json`` data.
  159. v1.6
  160. ****
  161. Full Documentation

  164. What's new
  165. ----------
  166. .. http:post:: /containers/(id)/attach
  167. **New!** You can now split stderr from stdout. This is done by prefixing
  168. a header to each transmition. See :http:post:`/containers/(id)/attach`.
  169. The WebSocket attach is unchanged.
  170. Note that attach calls on the previous API version didn't change. Stdout and
  171. stderr are merged.
  172. v1.5
  173. ****
  174. Full Documentation
  175. ------------------
  176. :doc:`docker_remote_api_v1.5`
  177. What's new
  178. ----------
  179. .. http:post:: /images/create
  180. **New!** You can now pass registry credentials (via an AuthConfig object)
  181. through the `X-Registry-Auth` header
  182. .. http:post:: /images/(name)/push
  183. **New!** The AuthConfig object now needs to be passed through
  184. the `X-Registry-Auth` header
  185. .. http:get:: /containers/json
  186. **New!** The format of the `Ports` entry has been changed to a list of
  187. dicts each containing `PublicPort`, `PrivatePort` and `Type` describing a
  188. port mapping.
  189. v1.4
  190. ****
  191. Full Documentation
  192. ------------------
  193. :doc:`docker_remote_api_v1.4`
  194. What's new
  195. ----------
  196. .. http:post:: /images/create
  197. **New!** When pulling a repo, all images are now downloaded in parallel.
  198. .. http:get:: /containers/(id)/top
  199. **New!** You can now use ps args with docker top, like `docker top <container_id> aux`
  200. .. http:get:: /events:
  201. **New!** Image's name added in the events
  202. v1.3
  203. ****
  204. docker v0.5.0 51f6c4a_
  205. Full Documentation
  206. ------------------
  207. :doc:`docker_remote_api_v1.3`
  208. What's new
  209. ----------
  210. .. http:get:: /containers/(id)/top
  211. List the processes running inside a container.
  212. .. http:get:: /events:
  213. **New!** Monitor docker's events via streaming or via polling
  214. Builder (/build):
  215. - Simplify the upload of the build context
  216. - Simply stream a tarball instead of multipart upload with 4
  217. intermediary buffers
  218. - Simpler, less memory usage, less disk usage and faster
  219. .. Warning::
  220. The /build improvements are not reverse-compatible. Pre 1.3 clients
  221. will break on /build.
  222. List containers (/containers/json):
  223. - You can use size=1 to get the size of the containers
  224. Start containers (/containers/<id>/start):
  225. - You can now pass host-specific configuration (e.g. bind mounts) in
  226. the POST body for start calls
  227. v1.2
  228. ****
  229. docker v0.4.2 2e7649b_
  230. Full Documentation
  231. ------------------
  232. :doc:`docker_remote_api_v1.2`
  233. What's new
  234. ----------
  235. The auth configuration is now handled by the client.
  236. The client should send it's authConfig as POST on each call of
  237. /images/(name)/push
  238. .. http:get:: /auth
  239. **Deprecated.**
  240. .. http:post:: /auth
  241. Only checks the configuration but doesn't store it on the server
  242. Deleting an image is now improved, will only untag the image if it
  243. has children and remove all the untagged parents if has any.
  244. .. http:post:: /images/<name>/delete
  245. Now returns a JSON structure with the list of images
  246. deleted/untagged.

  260. HTTP/1.1 200 OK
  261. Content-Type: application/json
  262. {"status":"Pushing..."}
