  1. :title: Remote API
  2. :description: API Documentation for Docker
  3. :keywords: API, Docker, rcli, REST, documentation
  4. .. COMMENT use http://pythonhosted.org/sphinxcontrib-httpdomain/ to
  5. .. document the REST API.
  6. =================
  7. Docker Remote API
  8. =================
  9. 1. Brief introduction
  10. =====================
  11. - The Remote API is replacing rcli
  12. - By default the Docker daemon listens on unix:///var/run/docker.sock and the client must have root access to interact with the daemon
  13. - If a group named *docker* exists on your system, docker will apply ownership of the socket to the group
  14. - The API tends to be REST, but for some complex commands, like attach
  15. or pull, the HTTP connection is hijacked to transport stdout stdin
  16. and stderr
  17. - Since API version 1.2, the auth configuration is now handled client
  18. side, so the client has to send the authConfig as POST in
  19. /images/(name)/push
  20. 2. Versions
  21. ===========
  22. The current version of the API is 1.9
  23. Calling /images/<name>/insert is the same as calling
  24. /v1.9/images/<name>/insert
  25. You can still call an old version of the api using
  26. /v1.0/images/<name>/insert
  27. v1.9
  28. ****
  29. Full Documentation
  30. ------------------
  31. :doc:`docker_remote_api_v1.9`
  32. What's new
  33. ----------
  34. .. http:get:: /images/json
  35. **New!** This endpoint now returns a list of json message, like the events endpoint
  36. .. http:get:: /images/(name)/history
  37. **New!** This endpoint now returns a list of json message, like the events endpoint
  38. v1.8
  39. ****
  40. Full Documentation
  41. ------------------
  42. :doc:`docker_remote_api_v1.8`
  43. What's new
  44. ----------
  45. .. http:post:: /build
  46. **New!** This endpoint now returns build status as json stream. In case
  47. of a build error, it returns the exit status of the failed command.
  48. .. http:get:: /containers/(id)/json
  49. **New!** This endpoint now returns the host config for the container.
  50. .. http:post:: /images/create
  51. .. http:post:: /images/(name)/insert
  52. .. http:post:: /images/(name)/push
  53. **New!** progressDetail object was added in the JSON. It's now possible
  54. to get the current value and the total of the progress without having to
  55. parse the string.
  56. v1.7
  57. ****
  58. Full Documentation
  59. ------------------
  60. :doc:`docker_remote_api_v1.7`
  61. What's new
  62. ----------
  63. .. http:get:: /images/json
  64. The format of the json returned from this uri changed. Instead of an entry
  65. for each repo/tag on an image, each image is only represented once, with a
  66. nested attribute indicating the repo/tags that apply to that image.
  67. Instead of:
  68. .. sourcecode:: http
  69. HTTP/1.1 200 OK
  70. Content-Type: application/json

  141. .. http:get:: /images/viz
  142. This URI no longer exists. The ``images -viz`` output is now generated in
  143. the client, using the ``/images/json`` data.

  146. Full Documentation

  149. What's new
  150. ----------
  151. .. http:post:: /containers/(id)/attach
  152. **New!** You can now split stderr from stdout. This is done by prefixing
  153. a header to each transmition. See :http:post:`/containers/(id)/attach`.
  154. The WebSocket attach is unchanged.
  155. Note that attach calls on the previous API version didn't change. Stdout and
  156. stderr are merged.

  161. :doc:`docker_remote_api_v1.5`
  162. What's new
  163. ----------
  164. .. http:post:: /images/create
  165. **New!** You can now pass registry credentials (via an AuthConfig object)
  166. through the `X-Registry-Auth` header
  167. .. http:post:: /images/(name)/push
  168. **New!** The AuthConfig object now needs to be passed through
  169. the `X-Registry-Auth` header
  170. .. http:get:: /containers/json
  171. **New!** The format of the `Ports` entry has been changed to a list of
  172. dicts each containing `PublicPort`, `PrivatePort` and `Type` describing a
  173. port mapping.

  181. .. http:post:: /images/create
  182. **New!** When pulling a repo, all images are now downloaded in parallel.
  183. .. http:get:: /containers/(id)/top
  184. **New!** You can now use ps args with docker top, like `docker top <container_id> aux`
  185. .. http:get:: /events:
  186. **New!** Image's name added in the events
  187. v1.3
  188. ****
  189. docker v0.5.0 51f6c4a_
  190. Full Documentation
  191. ------------------
  192. :doc:`docker_remote_api_v1.3`
  193. What's new
  194. ----------
  195. .. http:get:: /containers/(id)/top
  196. List the processes running inside a container.
  197. .. http:get:: /events:
  198. **New!** Monitor docker's events via streaming or via polling
  199. Builder (/build):
  200. - Simplify the upload of the build context
  201. - Simply stream a tarball instead of multipart upload with 4
  202. intermediary buffers
  203. - Simpler, less memory usage, less disk usage and faster
  204. .. Warning::
  205. The /build improvements are not reverse-compatible. Pre 1.3 clients
  206. will break on /build.
  207. List containers (/containers/json):
  208. - You can use size=1 to get the size of the containers
  209. Start containers (/containers/<id>/start):
  210. - You can now pass host-specific configuration (e.g. bind mounts) in
  211. the POST body for start calls
  212. v1.2
  213. ****
  214. docker v0.4.2 2e7649b_
  215. Full Documentation
  216. ------------------
  217. :doc:`docker_remote_api_v1.2`
  218. What's new
  219. ----------
  220. The auth configuration is now handled by the client.
  221. The client should send it's authConfig as POST on each call of
  222. /images/(name)/push
  223. .. http:get:: /auth
  224. **Deprecated.**
  225. .. http:post:: /auth
  226. Only checks the configuration but doesn't store it on the server
  227. Deleting an image is now improved, will only untag the image if it
  228. has children and remove all the untagged parents if has any.
  229. .. http:post:: /images/<name>/delete
  230. Now returns a JSON structure with the list of images
  231. deleted/untagged.
