  7. To list available commands, either run ``docker`` with no parameters or execute
  8. ``docker help``::
  9. $ sudo docker
  10. Usage: docker [OPTIONS] COMMAND [arg...]
  11. -H=[unix:///var/run/docker.sock]: tcp://[host[:port]] to bind/connect to or unix://[/path/to/socket] to use. When host=[0.0.0.0], port=[4243] or path=[/var/run/docker.sock] is omitted, default values are used.
  12. A self-sufficient runtime for linux containers.

  14. .. _cli_daemon:
  15. ``daemon``
  16. ----------
  17. ::
  18. Usage of docker:
  19. -D=false: Enable debug mode
  20. -H=[unix:///var/run/docker.sock]: tcp://[host[:port]] to bind or unix://[/path/to/socket] to use. When host=[0.0.0.0], port=[4243] or path=[/var/run/docker.sock] is omitted, default values are used.
  21. -api-enable-cors=false: Enable CORS headers in the remote API
  22. -b="": Attach containers to a pre-existing network bridge; use 'none' to disable container networking
  23. -bip="": Use the provided CIDR notation address for the dynamically created bridge (docker0); Mutually exclusive of -b
  24. -d=false: Enable daemon mode
  25. -dns="": Force docker to use specific DNS servers
  26. -g="/var/lib/docker": Path to use as the root of the docker runtime
  27. -icc=true: Enable inter-container communication
  28. -ip="0.0.0.0": Default IP address to use when binding container ports
  29. -iptables=true: Disable docker's addition of iptables rules
  30. -mtu=1500: Set the containers network mtu
  31. -p="/var/run/docker.pid": Path to use for daemon PID file
  32. -r=true: Restart previously running containers
  33. -s="": Force the docker runtime to use a specific storage driver
  34. -v=false: Print version information and quit
  35. The Docker daemon is the persistent process that manages containers. Docker uses the same binary for both the
  36. daemon and client. To run the daemon you provide the ``-d`` flag.
  37. To force Docker to use devicemapper as the storage driver, use ``docker -d -s devicemapper``.
  38. To set the DNS server for all Docker containers, use ``docker -d -dns 8.8.8.8``.
  39. To run the daemon with debug output, use ``docker -d -D``.
  40. .. _cli_attach:
  41. ``attach``
  42. ----------
  43. ::
  44. Usage: docker attach CONTAINER
  45. Attach to a running container.
  46. -nostdin=false: Do not attach stdin
  47. -sig-proxy=true: Proxify all received signal to the process (even in non-tty mode)
  48. You can detach from the container again (and leave it running) with
  49. ``CTRL-c`` (for a quiet exit) or ``CTRL-\`` to get a stacktrace of
  50. the Docker client when it quits. When you detach from the container's
  51. process the exit code will be returned to the client.
  52. To stop a container, use ``docker stop``.
  53. To kill the container, use ``docker kill``.

  96. using an :ref:`ADD <dockerfile_add>` instruction. When a single ``Dockerfile``
  97. is given as ``URL``, then no context is set. When a Git repository is set as

  127. This example specifies that the ``PATH`` is ``.``, and so all the files in
  128. the local directory get tar'd and sent to the Docker daemon. The ``PATH``
  129. specifies where to find the files for the "context" of the build on
  130. the Docker daemon. Remember that the daemon could be running on a
  131. remote machine and that no parsing of the ``Dockerfile`` happens at the
  132. client side (where you're running ``docker build``). That means that
  133. *all* the files at ``PATH`` get sent, not just the ones listed to
  134. :ref:`ADD <dockerfile_add>` in the ``Dockerfile``.
  135. The transfer of context from the local machine to the Docker daemon is
  136. what the ``docker`` client means when you see the "Uploading context"
  137. message.
  138. .. code-block:: bash
  139. $ sudo docker build -t vieux/apache:2.0 .
  140. This will build like the previous example, but it will then tag the
  141. resulting image. The repository name will be ``vieux/apache`` and the
  142. tag will be ``2.0``
  143. .. code-block:: bash
  144. $ sudo docker build - < Dockerfile
  145. This will read a ``Dockerfile`` from *stdin* without context. Due to
  146. the lack of a context, no contents of any local directory will be sent
  147. to the ``docker`` daemon. Since there is no context, a ``Dockerfile``
  148. ``ADD`` only works if it refers to a remote URL.
  149. .. code-block:: bash
  150. $ sudo docker build github.com/creack/docker-firefox
  151. This will clone the GitHub repository and use the cloned repository as
  152. context. The ``Dockerfile`` at the root of the repository is used as
  153. ``Dockerfile``. Note that you can specify an arbitrary Git repository
  154. by using the ``git://`` schema.

  179. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  180. Sometimes you have an application container running just a service and you need
  181. to make a quick change and then change it back.
  182. In this example, we run a container with ``ls`` and then change the image to
  183. run ``ls /etc``.

  421. .. _cli_import:
  422. ``import``
  423. ----------
  424. ::
  425. Usage: docker import URL|- [REPOSITORY[:TAG]]
  426. Create an empty filesystem image and import the contents of the tarball
  427. (.tar, .tar.gz, .tgz, .bzip, .tar.xz, .txz) into it, then optionally tag it.
  428. At this time, the URL must start with ``http`` and point to a single
  429. file archive (.tar, .tar.gz, .tgz, .bzip, .tar.xz, or .txz) containing a
  430. root filesystem. If you would like to import from a local directory or
  431. archive, you can use the ``-`` parameter to take the data from *stdin*.
  432. Examples
  433. ~~~~~~~~
  434. Import from a remote location
  435. .............................
  436. This will create a new untagged image.
  437. .. code-block:: bash
  438. $ sudo docker import http://example.com/exampleimage.tgz
  439. Import from a local file
  440. ........................
  441. Import to docker via pipe and *stdin*.
  442. .. code-block:: bash
  443. $ cat exampleimage.tgz | sudo docker import - exampleimagelocal:new
  444. Import from a local directory
  445. .............................
  446. .. code-block:: bash
  447. $ sudo tar -c . | docker import - exampleimagedir
  448. Note the ``sudo`` in this example -- you must preserve the ownership of the
  449. files (especially root ownership) during the archiving with tar. If you are not
  450. root (or the sudo command) when you tar, then the ownerships might not get
  451. preserved.

  472. ----------
  473. ::
  474. Usage: docker insert IMAGE URL PATH
  475. Insert a file from URL in the IMAGE at PATH
  476. Use the specified ``IMAGE`` as the parent for a new image which adds a
  477. :ref:`layer <layer_def>` containing the new file. The ``insert`` command does
  478. not modify the original image, and the new image has the contents of the parent
  479. image, plus the new file.
  480. Examples
  481. ~~~~~~~~
  482. Insert file from GitHub
  483. .......................
  484. .. code-block:: bash
  485. $ sudo docker insert 8283e18b24bc https://raw.github.com/metalivedev/django/master/postinstall /tmp/postinstall.sh
  486. 06fd35556d7b
  487. .. _cli_inspect:
  488. ``inspect``
  489. -----------
  490. ::
  491. Usage: docker inspect CONTAINER|IMAGE [CONTAINER|IMAGE...]
  492. Return low-level information on a container/image
  493. -format="": Format the output using the given go template.
  494. By default, this will render all results in a JSON array. If a format
  495. is specified, the given template will be executed for each result.
  496. Go's `text/template <http://golang.org/pkg/text/template/>`_ package
  497. describes all the details of the format.
  498. Examples
  499. ~~~~~~~~
  500. Get an instance's IP Address
  501. ............................
  502. For the most part, you can pick out any field from the JSON in a
  503. fairly straightforward manner.
  504. .. code-block:: bash
  505. $ sudo docker inspect -format='{{.NetworkSettings.IPAddress}}' $INSTANCE_ID
  506. List All Port Bindings
  507. ......................
  508. One can loop over arrays and maps in the results to produce simple
  509. text output:
  510. .. code-block:: bash
  511. $ sudo docker inspect -format='{{range $p, $conf := .NetworkSettings.Ports}} {{$p}} -> {{(index $conf 0).HostPort}} {{end}}' $INSTANCE_ID
  512. Find a Specific Port Mapping
  513. ............................
  514. The ``.Field`` syntax doesn't work when the field name begins with a
  515. number, but the template language's ``index`` function does. The
  516. ``.NetworkSettings.Ports`` section contains a map of the internal port
  517. mappings to a list of external address/port objects, so to grab just
  518. the numeric public port, you use ``index`` to find the specific port
  519. map, and then ``index`` 0 contains first object inside of that. Then

  699. :ref:`change the command that a container runs <cli_commit_examples>`.
  700. Known Issues (run -volumes-from)
  701. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  702. * :issue:`2702`: "lxc-start: Permission denied - failed to mount"
  703. could indicate a permissions problem with AppArmor. Please see the
  704. issue for a workaround.
  705. Examples:
  706. ~~~~~~~~~
  707. .. code-block:: bash
  708. $ sudo docker run -cidfile /tmp/docker_test.cid ubuntu echo "test"
  709. This will create a container and print ``test`` to the console. The
  710. ``cidfile`` flag makes Docker attempt to create a new file and write the
  711. container ID to it. If the file exists already, Docker will return an
  712. error. Docker will close this file when ``docker run`` exits.
  713. .. code-block:: bash
  714. $ sudo docker run -t -i -rm ubuntu bash
  715. root@bc338942ef20:/# mount -t tmpfs none /mnt
  716. mount: permission denied
  717. This will *not* work, because by default, most potentially dangerous
  718. kernel capabilities are dropped; including ``cap_sys_admin`` (which is
  719. required to mount filesystems). However, the ``-privileged`` flag will
  720. allow it to run:
  721. .. code-block:: bash
  722. $ sudo docker run -privileged ubuntu bash
  723. root@50e3f57e16e6:/# mount -t tmpfs none /mnt
  724. root@50e3f57e16e6:/# df -h
  725. Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
  726. none 1.9G 0 1.9G 0% /mnt
  727. The ``-privileged`` flag gives *all* capabilities to the container,
  728. and it also lifts all the limitations enforced by the ``device``
  729. cgroup controller. In other words, the container can then do almost
  730. everything that the host can do. This flag exists to allow special
  731. use-cases, like running Docker within Docker.
  732. .. code-block:: bash
  733. $ sudo docker run -w /path/to/dir/ -i -t ubuntu pwd
  734. The ``-w`` lets the command being executed inside directory given,
  735. here ``/path/to/dir/``. If the path does not exists it is created inside the
  736. container.
  737. .. code-block:: bash
  738. $ sudo docker run -v `pwd`:`pwd` -w `pwd` -i -t ubuntu pwd
  739. The ``-v`` flag mounts the current working directory into the container.
  740. The ``-w`` lets the command being executed inside the current
  741. working directory, by changing into the directory to the value
  742. returned by ``pwd``. So this combination executes the command
  743. using the container, but inside the current working directory.
  744. .. code-block:: bash
  745. $ sudo docker run -p 127.0.0.1:80:8080 ubuntu bash
  746. This binds port ``8080`` of the container to port ``80`` on ``127.0.0.1`` of the
  747. host machine. :ref:`port_redirection` explains in detail how to manipulate ports
  748. in Docker.
  749. .. code-block:: bash
  750. $ sudo docker run -expose 80 ubuntu bash
  751. This exposes port ``80`` of the container for use within a link without
  752. publishing the port to the host system's interfaces. :ref:`port_redirection`
  753. explains in detail how to manipulate ports in Docker.
  754. .. code-block:: bash
  755. $ sudo docker run -name console -t -i ubuntu bash
  756. This will create and run a new container with the container name
  757. being ``console``.
  758. .. code-block:: bash
  759. $ sudo docker run -link /redis:redis -name console ubuntu bash
  760. The ``-link`` flag will link the container named ``/redis`` into the
  761. newly created container with the alias ``redis``. The new container
  762. can access the network and environment of the redis container via
  763. environment variables. The ``-name`` flag will assign the name ``console``
  764. to the newly created container.
  765. .. code-block:: bash
  766. $ sudo docker run -volumes-from 777f7dc92da7,ba8c0c54f0f2:ro -i -t ubuntu pwd
  767. The ``-volumes-from`` flag mounts all the defined volumes from the
  768. referenced containers. Containers can be specified by a comma seperated
  769. list or by repetitions of the ``-volumes-from`` argument. The container
  770. ID may be optionally suffixed with ``:ro`` or ``:rw`` to mount the volumes in
  771. read-only or read-write mode, respectively. By default, the volumes are mounted
  772. in the same mode (read write or read only) as the reference container.
  773. A complete example
  774. ..................
  775. .. code-block:: bash
  776. $ sudo docker run -d -name static static-web-files sh
  777. $ sudo docker run -d -expose=8098 -name riak riakserver
  778. $ sudo docker run -d -m 100m -e DEVELOPMENT=1 -e BRANCH=example-code -v $(pwd):/app/bin:ro -name app appserver
  779. $ sudo docker run -d -p 1443:443 -dns=dns.dev.org -v /var/log/httpd -volumes-from static -link riak -link app -h www.sven.dev.org -name web webserver
  780. $ sudo docker run -t -i -rm -volumes-from web -w /var/log/httpd busybox tail -f access.log
  781. This example shows 5 containers that might be set up to test a web application change:
  782. 1. Start a pre-prepared volume image ``static-web-files`` (in the background) that has CSS, image and static HTML in it, (with a ``VOLUME`` instruction in the ``Dockerfile`` to allow the web server to use those files);
  783. 2. Start a pre-prepared ``riakserver`` image, give the container name ``riak`` and expose port ``8098`` to any containers that link to it;
  784. 3. Start the ``appserver`` image, restricting its memory usage to 100MB, setting two environment variables ``DEVELOPMENT`` and ``BRANCH`` and bind-mounting the current directory (``$(pwd)``) in the container in read-only mode as ``/app/bin``;
  785. 4. Start the ``webserver``, mapping port ``443`` in the container to port ``1443`` on the Docker server, setting the DNS server to ``dns.dev.org``, creating a volume to put the log files into (so we can access it from another container), then importing the files from the volume exposed by the ``static`` container, and linking to all exposed ports from ``riak`` and ``app``. Lastly, we set the hostname to ``web.sven.dev.org`` so its consistent with the pre-generated SSL certificate;
  786. 5. Finally, we create a container that runs ``tail -f access.log`` using the logs volume from the ``web`` container, setting the workdir to ``/var/log/httpd``. The ``-rm`` option means that when the container exits, the container's layer is removed.
