  1. :title: Remote API
  2. :description: API Documentation for Docker
  3. :keywords: API, Docker, rcli, REST, documentation
  4. .. COMMENT use http://pythonhosted.org/sphinxcontrib-httpdomain/ to
  5. .. document the REST API.
  6. =================
  7. Docker Remote API
  8. =================
  9. 1. Brief introduction
  10. =====================
  11. - The Remote API is replacing rcli
  12. - By default the Docker daemon listens on unix:///var/run/docker.sock and the client must have root access to interact with the daemon
  13. - If a group named *docker* exists on your system, docker will apply ownership of the socket to the group
  14. - The API tends to be REST, but for some complex commands, like attach
  15. or pull, the HTTP connection is hijacked to transport stdout stdin
  16. and stderr
  17. - Since API version 1.2, the auth configuration is now handled client
  18. side, so the client has to send the authConfig as POST in
  19. /images/(name)/push
  20. 2. Versions
  21. ===========
  22. The current version of the API is 1.9
  23. Calling /images/<name>/insert is the same as calling
  24. /v1.9/images/<name>/insert
  25. You can still call an old version of the api using
  26. /v1.0/images/<name>/insert
  27. v1.9
  28. ****
  29. Full Documentation
  30. ------------------
  31. :doc:`docker_remote_api_v1.9`
  32. What's new
  33. ----------
  34. .. http:get:: /images/json
  35. **New!** This endpoint now returns a list of json message, like the events endpoint
  36. .. http:get:: /images/(name)/history
  37. **New!** This endpoint now returns a list of json message, like the events endpoint
  38. .. http:post:: /build
  39. **New!** This endpoint now takes a serialized ConfigFile which it uses to
  40. resolve the proper registry auth credentials for pulling the base image.
  41. Clients which previously implemented the version accepting an AuthConfig
  42. object must be updated.
  43. v1.8
  44. ****
  45. Full Documentation
  46. ------------------
  47. :doc:`docker_remote_api_v1.8`
  48. What's new
  49. ----------
  50. .. http:post:: /build
  51. **New!** This endpoint now returns build status as json stream. In case
  52. of a build error, it returns the exit status of the failed command.
  53. .. http:get:: /containers/(id)/json
  54. **New!** This endpoint now returns the host config for the container.
  55. .. http:post:: /images/create
  56. .. http:post:: /images/(name)/insert
  57. .. http:post:: /images/(name)/push
  58. **New!** progressDetail object was added in the JSON. It's now possible
  59. to get the current value and the total of the progress without having to
  60. parse the string.
  61. v1.7
  62. ****
  63. Full Documentation
  64. ------------------
  65. :doc:`docker_remote_api_v1.7`
  66. What's new
  67. ----------
  68. .. http:get:: /images/json
  69. The format of the json returned from this uri changed. Instead of an entry
  70. for each repo/tag on an image, each image is only represented once, with a
  71. nested attribute indicating the repo/tags that apply to that image.
  72. Instead of:
  73. .. sourcecode:: http
  74. HTTP/1.1 200 OK
  75. Content-Type: application/json

  146. .. http:get:: /images/viz
  147. This URI no longer exists. The ``images -viz`` output is now generated in
  148. the client, using the ``/images/json`` data.
  149. v1.6
  150. ****
  151. Full Documentation
  152. ------------------
  153. :doc:`docker_remote_api_v1.6`
  154. What's new
  155. ----------
  156. .. http:post:: /containers/(id)/attach
  157. **New!** You can now split stderr from stdout. This is done by prefixing
  158. a header to each transmition. See :http:post:`/containers/(id)/attach`.
  159. The WebSocket attach is unchanged.
  160. Note that attach calls on the previous API version didn't change. Stdout and
  161. stderr are merged.
  162. v1.5
  163. ****
  164. Full Documentation
  165. ------------------
  166. :doc:`docker_remote_api_v1.5`
  167. What's new
  168. ----------
  169. .. http:post:: /images/create
  170. **New!** You can now pass registry credentials (via an AuthConfig object)
  171. through the `X-Registry-Auth` header
  172. .. http:post:: /images/(name)/push
  173. **New!** The AuthConfig object now needs to be passed through
  174. the `X-Registry-Auth` header
  175. .. http:get:: /containers/json
  176. **New!** The format of the `Ports` entry has been changed to a list of
  177. dicts each containing `PublicPort`, `PrivatePort` and `Type` describing a
  178. port mapping.
  179. v1.4

  181. Full Documentation
  182. ------------------
  183. :doc:`docker_remote_api_v1.4`
  184. What's new
  185. ----------
  186. .. http:post:: /images/create
  187. **New!** When pulling a repo, all images are now downloaded in parallel.
  188. .. http:get:: /containers/(id)/top
  189. **New!** You can now use ps args with docker top, like `docker top <container_id> aux`
  190. .. http:get:: /events:
  191. **New!** Image's name added in the events
  192. v1.3
  193. ****
  194. docker v0.5.0 51f6c4a_
  195. Full Documentation
  196. ------------------
  197. :doc:`docker_remote_api_v1.3`
  198. What's new
  199. ----------
  200. .. http:get:: /containers/(id)/top
  201. List the processes running inside a container.
  202. .. http:get:: /events:
  203. **New!** Monitor docker's events via streaming or via polling
  204. Builder (/build):
  205. - Simplify the upload of the build context
  206. - Simply stream a tarball instead of multipart upload with 4
  207. intermediary buffers
  208. - Simpler, less memory usage, less disk usage and faster
  209. .. Warning::
  210. The /build improvements are not reverse-compatible. Pre 1.3 clients
  211. will break on /build.
  212. List containers (/containers/json):
  213. - You can use size=1 to get the size of the containers
  214. Start containers (/containers/<id>/start):
  215. - You can now pass host-specific configuration (e.g. bind mounts) in
  216. the POST body for start calls
  217. v1.2
  218. ****
  219. docker v0.4.2 2e7649b_
  220. Full Documentation
  221. ------------------
  222. :doc:`docker_remote_api_v1.2`
  223. What's new
  224. ----------
  225. The auth configuration is now handled by the client.
  226. The client should send it's authConfig as POST on each call of
  227. /images/(name)/push
  228. .. http:get:: /auth
  229. **Deprecated.**
  230. .. http:post:: /auth
  231. Only checks the configuration but doesn't store it on the server
  232. Deleting an image is now improved, will only untag the image if it
  233. has children and remove all the untagged parents if has any.
  234. .. http:post:: /images/<name>/delete
  235. Now returns a JSON structure with the list of images
  236. deleted/untagged.

  248. Uses json stream instead of HTML hijack, it looks like this:
  249. .. sourcecode:: http
  250. HTTP/1.1 200 OK
  251. Content-Type: application/json
  252. {"status":"Pushing..."}
