  1. :title: Remote API
  2. :description: API Documentation for Docker
  3. :keywords: API, Docker, rcli, REST, documentation
  4. .. COMMENT use http://pythonhosted.org/sphinxcontrib-httpdomain/ to
  5. .. document the REST API.
  6. =================
  7. Docker Remote API
  8. =================
  9. 1. Brief introduction
  10. =====================
  11. - The Remote API is replacing rcli
  12. - By default the Docker daemon listens on unix:///var/run/docker.sock and the client must have root access to interact with the daemon
  13. - If a group named *docker* exists on your system, docker will apply ownership of the socket to the group
  14. - The API tends to be REST, but for some complex commands, like attach
  15. or pull, the HTTP connection is hijacked to transport stdout stdin
  16. and stderr
  17. - Since API version 1.2, the auth configuration is now handled client
  18. side, so the client has to send the authConfig as POST in
  19. /images/(name)/push
  20. 2. Versions
  21. ===========
  22. The current version of the API is 1.7
  23. Calling /images/<name>/insert is the same as calling
  24. /v1.7/images/<name>/insert
  25. You can still call an old version of the api using
  26. /v1.0/images/<name>/insert
  27. v1.8

  32. What's new
  33. ----------
  34. .. http:post:: /build
  35. **New!** This endpoint now returns build status as json stream. In case
  36. of a build error, it returns the exit status of the failed command.
  37. .. http:get:: /containers/(id)/json
  38. **New!** This endpoint now returns the host config for the container.
  39. .. http:post:: /images/create
  40. .. http:post:: /images/(name)/insert
  41. .. http:post:: /images/(name)/push
  42. **New!** progressDetail object was added in the JSON. It's now possible
  43. to get the current value and the total of the progress without having to
  44. parse the string.
  45. v1.7

  47. Full Documentation

  49. :doc:`docker_remote_api_v1.7`
  50. What's new
  51. ----------
  52. .. http:get:: /images/json
  53. The format of the json returned from this uri changed. Instead of an entry
  54. for each repo/tag on an image, each image is only represented once, with a
  55. nested attribute indicating the repo/tags that apply to that image.
  56. Instead of:
  57. .. sourcecode:: http
  58. HTTP/1.1 200 OK
  59. Content-Type: application/json

  130. .. http:get:: /images/viz
  131. This URI no longer exists. The ``images -viz`` output is now generated in
  132. the client, using the ``/images/json`` data.
  133. v1.6
  134. ****
  135. Full Documentation
  136. ------------------
  137. :doc:`docker_remote_api_v1.6`
  138. What's new
  139. ----------
  140. .. http:post:: /containers/(id)/attach
  141. **New!** You can now split stderr from stdout. This is done by prefixing
  142. a header to each transmition. See :http:post:`/containers/(id)/attach`.
  143. The WebSocket attach is unchanged.
  144. Note that attach calls on the previous API version didn't change. Stdout and
  145. stderr are merged.
  146. v1.5
  147. ****
  148. Full Documentation
  149. ------------------
  150. :doc:`docker_remote_api_v1.5`
  151. What's new
  152. ----------
  153. .. http:post:: /images/create
  154. **New!** You can now pass registry credentials (via an AuthConfig object)
  155. through the `X-Registry-Auth` header
  156. .. http:post:: /images/(name)/push
  157. **New!** The AuthConfig object now needs to be passed through
  158. the `X-Registry-Auth` header
  159. .. http:get:: /containers/json
  160. **New!** The format of the `Ports` entry has been changed to a list of
  161. dicts each containing `PublicPort`, `PrivatePort` and `Type` describing a
  162. port mapping.
  163. v1.4

  168. What's new
  169. ----------
  170. .. http:post:: /images/create
  171. **New!** When pulling a repo, all images are now downloaded in parallel.
  172. .. http:get:: /containers/(id)/top
  173. **New!** You can now use ps args with docker top, like `docker top <container_id> aux`
  174. .. http:get:: /events:
  175. **New!** Image's name added in the events
  176. v1.3
  177. ****
  178. docker v0.5.0 51f6c4a_
  179. Full Documentation
  180. ------------------
  181. :doc:`docker_remote_api_v1.3`
  182. What's new
  183. ----------
  184. .. http:get:: /containers/(id)/top
  185. List the processes running inside a container.
  186. .. http:get:: /events:
  187. **New!** Monitor docker's events via streaming or via polling
  188. Builder (/build):
  189. - Simplify the upload of the build context
  190. - Simply stream a tarball instead of multipart upload with 4
  191. intermediary buffers
  192. - Simpler, less memory usage, less disk usage and faster
  193. .. Warning::
  194. The /build improvements are not reverse-compatible. Pre 1.3 clients
  195. will break on /build.
  196. List containers (/containers/json):
  197. - You can use size=1 to get the size of the containers
  198. Start containers (/containers/<id>/start):
  199. - You can now pass host-specific configuration (e.g. bind mounts) in
  200. the POST body for start calls
  201. v1.2
  202. ****
  203. docker v0.4.2 2e7649b_
  204. Full Documentation
  205. ------------------
  206. :doc:`docker_remote_api_v1.2`
  207. What's new
  208. ----------
  209. The auth configuration is now handled by the client.
  210. The client should send it's authConfig as POST on each call of
  211. /images/(name)/push
  212. .. http:get:: /auth
  213. **Deprecated.**
  214. .. http:post:: /auth
  215. Only checks the configuration but doesn't store it on the server
  216. Deleting an image is now improved, will only untag the image if it
  217. has children and remove all the untagged parents if has any.
  218. .. http:post:: /images/<name>/delete
  219. Now returns a JSON structure with the list of images
  220. deleted/untagged.

  229. .. http:post:: /images/create
  230. .. http:post:: /images/(name)/insert
  231. .. http:post:: /images/(name)/push
  232. Uses json stream instead of HTML hijack, it looks like this:
  233. .. sourcecode:: http
  234. HTTP/1.1 200 OK
  235. Content-Type: application/json
  236. {"status":"Pushing..."}
