The call will be handled in `TextEditor::keydown_event`, just after that
`EditingEngine::on_key()` is called.

This was done with the `ambr` search and replace tool.

When using the VimEditingEngine in the TextEditor, vim's mode and the
previous key are shown in the editor's statusbar.
